Links

Before we get into the growing links, if you are interested in an allotment at Sunningdale please contact Anne Martin at Sunningdale Parish Council. The Parish Council web site contains her contact details.

You will find links scattered throughout the various web pages on this site. Here, in addition, is a (hopefully) useful set of general links to other web sites. Let me know of any sites that you recommend.

Web Site

Observations

Cultivation

HDRA

Henry Doubleday Research Association – the champions of organic growing – it contains a range of useful factsheets. Membership required to obtain full access to available information

Royal Horticultural Society

Some free information but membership required to obtain full access

National Vegetable Society

Includes useful articles on growing individual vegetables, fruit and herbs.

GardenAction

A useful site with a core set of articles on selected vegetable, fruit and herbs

David Frary’s site

Extremely useful site for new plot holders, It covers: clearing the site, digging and first year cultivation

Growyourown.info Comprehensive range of crops covered: good navigation, lots of pics and very readable

Garden Zone

Useful site on the organic approach. Includes brief notes on the cultivation of selected crops

Meiosis.co.uk Excellent site with very useful information on recent soft fruit varieties.
Fredshed enthusiast who reviews gardening and diy tools.
Plants for a Future If you are into trying something new this site contains detailed info on plants (edible and medicinal); many are little known in the UK.

Hoxton Manor Allotments

Arguably the most comprehensive web site for an allotment site that I have so far seen. It includes lots of links.

digmyplot.co.uk

Personal site of an organic allotment holder. Well-written with good photos; concentrates on general aspects, i.e. no information on growing individual crops

No dig vegetable gardening

Useful web site for those who are interested in no dig techniques.

Plant Cultures

Kew Gardens - useful information on more exotic crops such as chilli

Gardener’s Network

Contains a fairly comprehensive set of useful “how to grow” pages. Appears to be American-based

Doctor George Cook’s site (alias allaboutliverpool.com)

Another useful site for new plot holders. While David Frary’s site is more in-depth, George Cook’s pages major in photos, lots of them in fact. He appears to be quite a keen photographer

FreshFoodCentral

This has the makings of a solid, professional-looking site, marrying the background information that can be found on Wikipedia with some information on growing individual crops and a useful-looking set of links. However, it has a very limited set of crops at the moment. One possible disadvantage for us is that it looks US centric to my untutored eye

Greenhouse Growing

General Sites

Allotments4All

This site is arguably the best forum in the UK for plot holders. You have to register to be able to post items. Advice on cultivation is added by users.

http://www.allotment.org.uk/

A personal site that contains useful articles on many aspects of cultivation, a personal diary and links to other sites. It also hosts a popular forum (you have to register to be able to post items)

WebRing

allows people and organisations to form a “community”. In this case it is the allotment & vegetable gardening community (or ring as it is called). In essence, it simply provides details of other allotment-related sites that can be browsed.

Diaries & Blogs

Vortex's blog Blog of a Sunningdale plot holder

Links to personal diaries

People who maintain online diaries of their allotment experiences (linked through the allotment.org.uk site mentioned above)

Jane Perrone’s blog

I ought to make mention of blogs although I am a bit ambivalent about them (bah humbug!), but others love them. I have chosen this one because (a) she has recently written a book on allotments and (b) more importantly, it includes links to quite a few other allotment blogs … and you have to start somewhere. Blog search engines, e.g. Technorati, do not seem a great deal of help as far as I can see

Organisations

National Society of Allotment & Leisure Gardeners Ltd

Contains information relating to the society, how to find an allotment, allotment law, et cetera. No information on cultivation

The Soil Association

Useful for general information on their work but contains no detailed advice for the gardener that I can see

Miscellaneous

Allotment Regeneration

The Centre for Environmental Initiatives (working name ecolocal) has a section on advice for regenerating or improving allotment sites.

Wikipedia article on Allotments

Has an international flavour

Rainfall Radar

I am sure that many of you use the Met Office web site. The rainfall radar page provides an animated picture over the last 6 hours (based on snapshots taken every 30 minutes). It is very useful for making an informed opinion on the likelihood of rain during your planned visit to the plot. Note that as it downloads a lot of data it can be quite slow over a dial-up connection.
